Most of the individuals doing business online get confused between static or dynamic IP addresses. The choice of correct IP address is again a dilemma they need to solve. It is necessary to understand what an IP address does before making the choice though. Any computer that joins a network does it through an IP address. The data that is transferred on internet is basically transferred from your IP to the IP address of the other. It would not be wrong to say that IP addresses make the network and are the backbone of Internet.
Every computer that is connected to the internet is bound to have an IP address. It would have been easier then to assign a permanent IP address to every machine. This however is not possible because of various reasons. There are lots of computers in this world and they keep on changing hands, getting damaged etc. Keeping a track of this change would be difficult. Also assigning IP addresses to each machine requires unlimited addresses which again is not possible. Therefore, use of static and dynamic IP address was thought of.
A Static IP address is the address that never changes. Once assigned to a particular machine it will remain the same whenever the work will be done on that machine. Dynamic IP, on the other hand, changes every minute. An individual using internet on a machine will have a dynamic IP for that session. IP changes with the change of session on the machine. Both static as well as dynamic IPs have their relevant uses and are required by the users.
Static IPs is not required most of the time by the user. For simple tasks like browsing the net, sending/receiving emails, downloading/uploading files, chatting/sending instant messages, etc. They are also not required if your work requires access from a single site only. In all these cases dynamic IP works efficiently.
In other cases like running one or more web server, email server, FTP server, DNS server or any other application that requires external access i.e. from internet.
Most of the time while using a computer the user does not require static IP as all his work can easily be performed using dynamic IP. Therefore, the web provides dynamic IP to one user and as soon as the session is closed by the user the same IP can be given to some other user. If we decide to use the internet again it is not possible for us to get the same IP nor do we need it.
